Young Mended Hearts
Heart support for a younger generation
Healing doesn’t mean the heart was never broken—it means it found the courage to beat with hope again. Young Mended Hearts is a place where young people can find strength, support, and the reminder that their story is still being written. Every heart deserves the chance to heal, grow, and love life again. And the highlight is that Young Mended Hearts was started right here in Bellingham and has since become a national model!

“To me, Young Mended Hearts means hope and family. YMH gave me the hope to persevere through heart failure and a heart transplant no matter how hard my journey became. I feel like I have a family who understands what I’m going through and now that I’m a mom, I know that family means everything.”
Peter
“My cardiologist suggested I attend a Young Mended Hearts meeting to meet other local heart patients before my surgery. The group was very friendly and supportive. The conversations with others experiencing similar situations really helped ease some of the stress. Today I continue to enjoy meeting with this group of supporters and friends, sharing our experiences, and helping each other and new members when they need encouragement or just an understanding listener.“
Monique
“After my sudden stroke and open-heart surgery, Young Mended Hearts welcomed me when I needed them most. Seeing those brave faces— surgery scars and all—brought immediate relief. I’m continually inspired by their bravery, grace, and the generous spirit they share with one another. “

"Being a young person with a heart issue is uncommon. Knowing that you’re not alone with that uncommon issue is a nice feeling."
Denise
"Preparing for my husband’s open-heart surgery was overwhelming and scary for both of us. Being a part of Young Mended Hearts has not only eased my husband’s journey, it has also reminded me that I am not alone in my role as “caregiver.” We both have drawn support from the tight-knit group and have been so happy to have a chance to share our experiences with others facing a similarly intimidating and emotional journey."
Tammy
“When my husband was diagnosed with heart failure, I was suddenly navigating fear, family, and financial stress as a caregiver. Young Mended Hearts connected me with others who truly understood—and reminded me that we were not alone and improved health is possible.”
Dawna
“Knowing that there are other young heart patients going through similar circumstances, makes me feel that I am not alone. It has also given me courage to share my story with others, without feeling like I am being judged.”
